Power To Learn

Vision
Cablevision believes that access to information leads to a powerful learning experience. For a quarter-century, Cablevision has provided free cable television service to public and private schools throughout its service communities, paving the way for educators to incorporate hundreds of hours of commercial-free educational programming into their school curricula.
With technology as today’s leading tool, Cablevision again responded creating Power to Learn, a multi-faceted initiative dedicated to integrating the Internet into education to enhance learning.
Power to Learn’s online learning community, powertolearn.com, contains excellent resources and content for students, teachers, administrators and parents. In addition, through its efforts, Power to Learn enables and encourages technology to be used as a supplement to classroom learning in New York metropolitan area schools.
Power to Learn is the most comprehensive education initiative available to tri-state communities, fully integrating technology into the classroom through broadband Internet access and online learning supplements, for use both in and out of the classroom.
Overview
ConnectivityPower to Learn began by wiring New York metropolitan area schools and libraries with high-speed Internet access. Since launching in 1998, Power to Learn has wired more than 1,300 schools and libraries — connecting more than 500,000 students and teachers to the Internet.
Community
Cablevision set out to guarantee that teachers, students and parents knew where on the Web they could go for education content. The company developed powertolearn.com, a local portal that offers teachers and students everything from access to experts like Dr. James Watson and Katie Couric to standards-based lesson plans and multimedia learning units.
Benefits
School AdministratorsTechnology is a critical component of K-12 education. Through the Power to Learn program, administrators bring technology, educational supplements and an online learning tool into the classroom with the fastest Internet connection available to New York, New Jersey and Connecticut schools.
- Cutting-Edge Power to Learn enables schools to integrate a new "knowledge stream" into traditional classroom projects, enhancing the classroom experience and giving students the opportunity for greater achievement.
Technology is a way of life for today's students, however, that is not always true for teachers and parents. Power to Learn understands that bringing technology into education is a critical task and seeks to facilitate use by teachers.
- Classroom Tools
studies indicate that only 10 percent of teachers feel "very well prepared" to incorporate the Internet into their curriculum. Power to Learn's "Teaching with Technology" articles provide educators with the guidance they need to successfully and comfortably begin taking advantage of all technology has to offer. - Content
Through powertolearn.com, Cablevision provides teachers with access to standards-based content, and extensive information that enhances classroom activity.
Today's students are at home with technology out of the classroom, why not in it?
- Challenging, Compelling Content
Powertolearn.com offers students interactive and collaborative learning opportunities that expand the boundaries of traditional classroom experiences into exciting new areas. - Multi-faceted
Powertolearn.com includes a "School to Career" program that provides students with the opportunity to learn about a variety of career choices; an "Ask the Expert" area of the Web site, where students can chat with icons from various industries such as James Watson, Katie Couric, Spike Lee and Reggie Jackson; and online educational games.
Power to Learn provides parents with valuable local content, multimedia learning opportunities with "at home" relevance and timely parenting with technology advice.
